Second-Generation Cap & Ball Colt Sixguns in 36 and 44 Cal. These black-powder revolvers are good investments and are fun to shoot — and don’t discount their use for home protection. The collecting of really old Colt revolvers can easily threaten the bank account, or even shatter it. Data I have on Colt SAA 3rd Generation serial numbers indicate this Colt was made in approximately 1998. For reference, year 2000 Colt SAA production started at serial number S26700A and the removable cylinder bushing was reinstated in late 2002 at approximately serial number S34000A.

Action Type: Single Action Percussion Black Powder Revolver
Markings: The left side of the frame is marked “COLT’S / PATENT / U.S.” The left side of the trigger guard is marked “44 CAL”. The underside of the barrel assembly, wedge, frame, trigger guard and back strap are marked with the matching serial number. The top of the barrel is marked “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA”. The cylinder is engraved with the Naval battle scene found on original C1860 cylinders and “633”. the backstrap is engraved 'BILL TILGHMAN' and the butt 'DEPT USM'.
Barrel Length: About 7 7/8” Round after being poorly recrowned...
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass blade with a sloping front surface fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a notch in the hammer, visible when cocked.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The one piece smooth walnut grip has been painted white and aged. This was done to simulate ivory, though we don't really like it. Otherwise the grip exhibits little evidence of use and are probably the original pair just needing some paint stripped.... The grips rate in about Fair overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue Barrel and Backstrap, Case Colored Frame and Loading Lever, Brass Trigger Guard
Finish Originality: All Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore but it is dirty.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 95% of its metal finish. There are a few surface scratches, patches of thinning and paint remaining from the 'aging'... There is a slight drag line, the wedge shows wear and does not fit perfectly and the crown has been re-ground poorly. The screw heads are a bit marked from an improper screwdriver. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this handgun.

Our Assessment: After the market for reproduction Colt black powder pistols was established, Colt contracted with Lou Imperato to revive the Colt line. Though the parts were cast by Uberti of Italy, Impernato fit the parts in the former Iver Johnson facilities, which he had purchased in the 1970s and moved to Middlesex, NJ. Under the subcontractor agreement to produce Second Generation percussion models, Imperato's responsibilities were to manufacture the revolvers to Colt's strict specifications, then ship the finished product to its Hartford facilities. Colt's then performed final inspection and shipped the revolvers to distributors. Because of Colt’s supervision and participation, firearms from the Second generation line (unlike the Third Generation line) are considered to be authentic Colts. This is a Second generation Colt C1860 Army. Everybody wants to own an original Colt.

The top of the barrel is marked “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY”. The cylinder is engraved with the Naval battle scene found on original cylinders and “802”.
Barrel Length: 7.5”
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass conical bead fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a notch in the hammer, visible when cocked.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The one piece smooth walnut grip has small compression marks on the both sides and a few scratches. Otherwise the grips are free of cracks - the wear looks more like storage wear than use wear. The fit is very good. The grips rate in about Very Good overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue, Case Colored & Plated
Finish Originality: All Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore but it is dirty.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 85% of its metal finish. There are a few surface scratches, most notable on the barrel and grip frame. There is little evidence of firing and most of the wear is from poor storage, assembly and disassembly. There is barely any drag line on the cylinder. The screw heads are a barely marked but the wedge is ugly. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Very Good condition. The right side of the frame has been milled, the nipples are exposed.
